Health Advisories

The Health Department issues periodic health advisories to alert citizens about disease outbreaks, seasonal health risks, vaccination drives, and preventive measures. The following advisories are currently in effect:

  • Seasonal Influenza Advisory (March 2026): With the change in season, the Health Department advises citizens to take precautions against seasonal influenza. Elderly persons, children under 5, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions are advised to get the annual flu vaccination. Maintain hand hygiene, cover mouth while coughing or sneezing, and avoid crowded places if symptomatic.
  • Vector-Borne Disease Prevention: As summer approaches, citizens are advised to eliminate stagnant water around their homes to prevent breeding of mosquitoes that transmit dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Use mosquito nets and repellents, especially during dawn and dusk hours. Report any fogging requirements to the Municipal Corporation.
  • Drinking Water Safety: The Public Health Engineering Department advises citizens to drink boiled or filtered water, especially during the transition between seasons. Report any contamination or discolouration of piped water supply immediately to the Water Supply Emergency number (1916).
  • Food Safety During Summer: The Food Safety Department advises citizens to avoid consuming uncovered street food, ensure proper refrigeration of perishable items, and maintain food hygiene to prevent foodborne illnesses during the warmer months.

Disaster Preparedness

The KKD eServices Authority, in coordination with the District Disaster Management Authority, provides the following guidelines for disaster preparedness:

Before a Disaster

  • Prepare an emergency kit containing essential medicines, first-aid supplies, torch, batteries, portable radio, important documents (in waterproof bag), water bottles, and non-perishable food items.
  • Identify the nearest emergency shelter and evacuation routes in your area. Contact the District Disaster Management Authority (1078) for shelter locations.
  • Keep emergency contact numbers saved on your phone and written on a card in your wallet.
  • Ensure your home has functional smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and that all family members know how to use them.
  • Register for emergency alerts through SMS by sending "ALERT KKD" to 56161.

During a Disaster

  • Stay calm and follow instructions from official sources (radio, TV, SMS alerts, public address systems).
  • Call 112 for immediate emergency assistance.
  • Do not spread unverified information. Rely only on official communications from the Disaster Management Authority and the district administration.
  • If evacuation is ordered, proceed to the nearest designated shelter. Do not attempt to return to your home until the all-clear is given by authorities.
  • If trapped, signal for help by tapping on walls or pipes, using a whistle, or using your phone's flashlight.

After a Disaster

  • Check yourself and family members for injuries. Administer first aid if trained, and call for medical help if needed.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings until they have been declared safe by the structural assessment team.
  • Report damaged infrastructure (fallen power lines, broken water mains, gas leaks) to the respective emergency numbers listed above.
  • Document damage to your property for insurance and relief claims. Photograph all damage before any repairs.
  • Register with the relief camp or local administration to receive disaster relief assistance.
